Types of the South Wales Borderers (1879)

These figures represent men of the 2nd Battalion of the 24th Regiment of Foot, also known as the South Wales Borderers, at the time of the Zulu War of 1879. Their finest hour was the defense of the mission station at Rorke's Drift in August 1879, as depicted in the classic film Zulu. At the Drift, just over 100 men, many of them sick or wounded, held their ground against multiple attacks by 4000 Zulu warriors. Nine Victoria Crosses were awarded to members of the 24th for their bravery at Rorke's Drift, the most ever awarded to any regiment in a single action in the history of the British Army.

"Trifle" was an early English pewter alloy of 83 parts tin and 17 parts antimony. It was used in the manufacture of spoons, shakers, buttons, and generally all small articles which could not be finished on the lathe. Men who worked this branch of pewter-making were known as "triflers." Lead was not a component of small articles because it is too soft, heavy, dull, and easily damaged.
